ORGAN DONATION
ORGAN DONATION:-
Organ donation is the process when a person allows an organ of their own to be removed and transplanted to another person, legally, either by consent while the donor is alive or dead with the assent of the next of kin.
There are thousands of patients waiting every day for an organ transplant but they only keep waiting because of the lack of donors.
Organ donation can be divided into three categories, which are directed donation, in which the donor gets to choose the person receiving the organ. The second is the non-directed donation; where the donor is not in the know of the person. The third type is paired donation, where only the kidney is donated to the person in need.
Why India needs to boost “Organ Donation”:-
India remains a country with one of the lowest organ donation rates in the world. The organ donation rates in India are very poor, as compared to some western countries. Awareness is the key to increase organ donor ratios in India.
● 500,000 people die of non-availability of organs
● 200,000 people die of liver disease
● 150,000 people await a kidney transplant
● 10,00,000 lakh people suffer corneal blindness
Organ transplantation and their legal aspects:-
India follow an opt-in system of organ donation. In an opt-in system, the person who is on the death bed is presumed to have given consent to be a donor before his or her death unless they had made a specific request not to donate the organs. organ donation in India is controlled by the Human Organ Act 1994. The legal forms for the people who are willing to donate their organs are given by India’s Ministry of health and family Welfare Government website.
National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) is a national-level organization set up under the government of India that foresees all the organ donation procedures all over the country as mandated by an act of Parliament.
A nonprofit organization by the name of Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC) which is set up in Mumbai. It started to promote organ donation in 2000 in Mumbai. It is registered under the Charity Commissioner’s Office.
The Organ Donation process:-
Young, adults, elderly, all can participate in this charitable process.
▪︎Registering as a Donor This process begins by registering name in national registry.
▪︎Brain Death Testing Only brain dead patients can become organ donors.
▪︎The matching process Healthcare specialists determine whether organ is medically suitable.
▪︎Recovering the Organs After removing the organ, surgeons connect it to a machine that keeps them working artificially.
- Heart: 4-6 hours
- Liver: 12-24 hours
- Kidney: 48-72 hours
- Lung: 4-6 hours
▪︎Transporting the Organs teams work round the clock to co-ordinate the retrieved organ and the recipient.
Conclusion:-
No caste – No bar – save lives – donate organs
Organ donation is a noble act. Let us come forward and fulfill one more duty of ours as true Indian Citizens by pledging our organs which can save many lives after we leave this planet. It is also important to make everyone aware of the importance of organ donation so please spread the word and help in saving lives.
